Dhanteras……..what is it??

October 21st, 2008

Dhanteras falls on the thirteenth day of the month of ashwin. The word “Dhan” means wealth. As such this day of the five-day diwali festival has a great importance for the rich mercantile community of western India. Houses and business premises are renovated and decorated. Entrances are made colorful with lovely traditional motifs of rangoli designs to welcome the goddess of wealth and prosperity. To indicate her long-awaited arrival, small footprints are drawn with rice flour and vermilion powder all over the houses. Lamps are kept burning all through the nights. On this auspicious day women purchase some gold or silver or at least one or two new utensils. Pooja is performed in the evenings when tiny diyas of clay are lighted to drive away the shadows of evil spirits. “Bhajans”-devotional songs- are sung in praise of Goddess Lakshmi.

Dhanteras is also known as Dhantrayodashi, and takes place two days before Diwali, in honour of Dhanavantri, the physician of the gods and an incarnation of Vishnu.

The legend of Samudramanthan is at the heart of these celebrations. Lord Indra was cursed by sage Durvasa that “The pride of wealth has entered his head and let Lakshmi leave him.” On account of Durvasa’s curse, Lakshmi left Indra and went away. As Lakshmi is the goddess of power, bravery, enthusiasm and radiance left, Devendra’s life became miserable. The demons that were waiting for such an opportunity invaded heaven, defeated Indra. He lost his kingdom and hid out of the sight of the demons.

A number of years passed. Indra’s teacher Brihaspati thought of finding a way out for Indra’s troubles. He went with the gods to Brahma, who went to Vishnu, A way was found out of it. The sea of milk was to be churned. It was a very difficult job. Therefore the friendship of the demons and get their assistance was required. Mandara Mountain was a churning rod and Vasuki, the king of the serpents, as a rope.

WWhen the sea will be churned ambrosia will be produced. The gods must drink it and become immortal. It will then be possible for gods to defeat the demons. When the sea is churned, Lakshmi who has disappeared will appear again. Her grace will be bestowed. The clever Brihaspati managed to strike a friendship with the demons who agreed in the hope of getting ambrosia and wealth. After initial difficulties posed by the sinking of mount Mandara into the milky sea which was set right by Lord Vishnu who took the form of a tortoise and hoisted it on his back, the churning started.

First, Kalakuta, a dreadful poison was produced which Lord Shiva drank much to the relief of the gods and demons. Due to Vishnu’s continued encouragement, gods and demons continued churning the sea. Then a horse by name Uchaishravas, Kalpavriksha had the power to grant what is wished, and Kamdhenu and other celestial articles took shape. When the sea continued to be churned the Apsara were born.

After that in the midst of the waves of the sea of milk, a goddess with heavenly looks came into view. She was standing on a fully blossomed lotus. Wearing a lotus garland in the neck, she was holding a lotus in her hand. She was attractive and was radiantly smiling, she was Lakshmi.

The sages began reciting hymns in praise of her. Gandharvas sang. Apsaras danced. The elephants on either side sprinkled sacred holy Ganga water on the goddess and bathed her. Because the elephants sprinkled holy water on her, she acquired the name of Gajalakshmi. Because she was born in the sea of milk, she was called Samudratanya. The king of the sea appeared in his natural form and comforted Lakshmi as a daughter. He presented her with attractive clothes and jewels. He handed to her a garland of lotus flowers. While everybody was looking in surprise, Lakshmi put the garland around the neck of Vishnu. Then she looked at Indra kindly, he acquired an extraordinary radiance.

The gods and demons continued to churn the ocean for Amrut or nectar, Finally Dhanavantri emerged carrying a jar of the elixir (ambrosia). Both the asuras and the devas wanted the ambrosia, but finally Vishnu managed to give the immortal nectar to the gods and the asuras where defeated. Thus the churning of the ocean resulted in the immortality of the devas and was the reason for Lakshmi’s emergence.

Another interesting story about this day is of the sixteen year old son of King Hima. As per his horoscope he was doomed to die by a snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage. On that particular fourth day of his marriage his young wife did not allow him to sleep. She laid all the ornaments and lots of gold and silver coins in a big heap at the entrance of her husband’s boudoir and lighted innumerable lamps all over the place. And she went on telling stories and singing songs. When Yam, the god of death arrived there in the guise of a serpent his eyes got blinded by that dazzle of those brilliant lights and he could not enter the prince’s chamber. So he climbed on top of the heap of the ornaments and coins and sat there whole night listening to the melodious songs. In the morning he quietly went away.

Thus the young wife saved her husband from the clutches of death. Since then this day of Dhanteras came to be known as the day of “YAMADEEPDAAN” and lamps are kept burning throughout the night in reverential adoration to Yam, the god of death.

RESUME RULES

October 2nd, 2008

A resume can often make or break the deal with potenial employers on institutes..i would like to highlight the crucial aspects of the pefect resume which need to be mentioned at various stages ….,
A common concern regarding the development of that all-important resume is fitting all the information in a single page, as is usally preferred by both universties as well as organisations.Students seeking admission or jobs are often perplexed about what data should take precedence .”I have completed several short -term courses in addition to my degree, and have worked in three summer jobs. However , if I try to accommodate these qualfications, there’s no space for other informations such as my strengths, interests and goals,”laments ravi( a freind of mine) , who is currently seeking a job in advertising .The solution is not too hard to come by if you are able to shift the matter that is relevant from that which can be side-stepped.
APPLYING FOR YOUR FIRST JOB
at this stage, you will most likely to fresh out of college, with a rough idea of what career path you would ultimately like to read, your first job is an essentail step in this direction -it will provide several oppurtunties to develop a professional outlook on the basis of your hard work and talent .Employers will look toward your resume with the intention og gelaning information such as your capability of handling responsibility, working well in a team and dealing with pressure. Thus , in addition to mentioning your basic qualifications , it is imperative that you include extracurricular activites you may have participated in.Be, it a sport you played, debate/elocution competitions you won, or leadership qualities u displayed now is the time to communicate that u are a keen, enthusiastic and deicated worker, your resume should ensure that despite having little or no work experience in the ‘real’ world, you have the maturity , skill and determination to tackle any task.Knowing a foreign language or having exceptional computer skills are other aspects worth mentioning…..APPLYING FOR A SWITCH JOB

as a young professional that you will switch a number of jobs, No two jobs are same, even if the designation you are applying to is similar to the one u currently hold. However , interpersonal skills and educational qualifications are requiremnts that tend to overlap, especially within the same industry.A typical resume in this context would then pay more attention to the kind of work u have been doing in u r current post, as well as an account of your responsbilties and any accomplishments to your credits…
Expectations from your new job in terms of innovative ideas u may have and responsibilties u could handle should be mentioned while eduactional qualifications can take a backseat here( unless you are switching over a different industry altogether).employers will look towards your experinece and your professional sucess in the past, and u r resume should provide this back ground without seeming pompous or wordy

coming up —-Resume rules part 3 …how to apply for a university …and a typical resume format…pls check it out ……….

who is a mentor?

April 9th, 2008

it is often said , if you dont know where you are going, any road will take you there.Lack of proper direction and guidance can stifle the process of your growth. It therefore becomes, imperative to find a mentor who has the ability, time and dedication to provide you with those necessary tips that will help you reach career goals.
who is a mentor?
IN simple words, a mentor is a wise and trusted counselor/teacher/trainer…..they act as a catalyst and nurture your potential and talent….
The need for a mentor is:
Remember that tough mathematics prblm that look hours to solve due to the lack of knowledge of the right method/ formula that had to be applied? Therfore, you took the help of your
maths teacher or tutor to understand the underlying concept….
Similarly in an organisation , one needs the correct method or path to achieve professional and personal goals, A mentor can help you in the following ways….
To gain in depth knowledge about the industry and the culuture of the organisation you are
working in, especially if you both are new to both….
and next for personal growth and development - to acquire leadership and communication skills …..

With the help of the mentor , you can build a network of contacts within and outside the organisation….

If you arrive at the point in your carrier whenyour duties are actuallly "easy", and you are in comfort zone, it is time to create some challenges of your own…..A mentor can give you a rael world perspective and keep you sharp….

Finding a mentor at work…
You must keep your eyes and ears open in order to identify a mentor….Obersving people at work is the best way …to identify whether they possses the skills you require to develop. A mentor could be a :
Senior excecuitive from the organisation….
An experienced
colleague….
senior professional from industry….
your old professor from campus also …..

I made the common mistake of restricting my search fora mentor to my immediate boss and senior management….However, I soon realised that good mentors often come from the most unlikely places.I have often taken advice from senior professionals from a different department or even a different organisation .I learnt the lesson quite early that it pays to keep my eyes and ears open as one could find mentors where you least expected….

Qualities that you must look for…………..
It is very important to identify the right mentor.Remember , we need to be the initial
judge of the qualities taht a mentor should possees….Ideally a mentor….
is easily accessible
is a good listener
is encouraging and motivating….
suggest news/creative ways to appraoach a prblm…
is far-sighted and experienced…
is ready to share his/her experience
possesses skills that you need to develop
Thus i conclude a mentor’s role is not about domain expertise but more about sharing life experinece and providing a frame work to approach the typical challenges that most professionals face…
Whiel having strong or immediate rapport is good, remember that a mentorship is not a freindship…you ‘re not trying to widen your social circle so amke sure that you are aware of the mentor’s availabilty so that you are not in conflict with his schedule….

26th January 1950 is one of the most important days in Indian history as it was on this day the constitution of India came into force and India became a truly sovereign state. In this day India became a totally republican unit. The country finally realized the dream of Mahatma Gandhi and the numerous freedom fighters who, fought for and sacrificed their lives for the Independence of their country. So, the 26th of January was decreed a national holiday and has been recognized and celebrated as the Republic Day of India, ever since.

Today, the Republic Day is celebrated with much enthusiasm all over the country and especially in the capital, New Delhi where the celebrations start with the Presidential to the nation. The beginning of the occasion is always a solemn reminder of the sacrifice of the martyrs who died for the country in the freedom movement and the succeeding wars for the defense of sovereignty of their country. Then, the President comes forward to award the medals of bravery to the people from the armed forces for their exceptional courage in the field and also the civilians, who have distinguished themselves by their different acts of valour in different situations.

To mark the importance of this occasion, every year a grand parade is held in the capital, from the Rajghat, along the Vijaypath. The different regiments of the army, the Navy and the Air force march past in all their finery and official decorations even the horses of the cavalry are attractively caparisoned to suit the occasion. The crème of N.C.C cadets, selected from all over the country consider it an honour to participate in this event, as do the school children from various schools in the capital. They spend many days preparing for the event and no expense is spared to see that every detail is taken care of, from their practice for the drills, the essential props and their uniforms.

The parade is followed by a pageant of spectacular displays from the different states of the country. These moving exhibits depict scenes of activities of people in those states and the music and songs of that particular state accompany each display. Each display brings out the diversity and richness of the culture of India and the whole show lends a festive air to the occasion. The parade and the ensuing pageantry is telecast by the National Television and is watched by millions of viewers in every corner of the country.

The patriotic fervor of the people on this day brings the whole country together even in her essential diversity. Every part of the country is represented in occasion, which makes the Republic Day the most popular of all the national holidays of India.
