RADIO BHOOM IN VIZAG

December 8th, 2007

in my vizag, sudden radio bhoomm erupted in a matter of 2 months, this dusheera and diwali brought a lot of fun to all vizagities, see radio mirchi, radio city, big fm, sfm, rainbow fm, vizag fm all started their local office in the city, now the listeners in vizag are really confused to hear which fm ????, but as per a survey conducted most people stick to sfm (93.5) as this is only 24hrs radio fm in vizag, radiocity caputered the vizagities heart by conducting voice hunts, instant cash games, while radio mirihi is also not behind, those who give a mirchi opinion on the issue asked by the radion jockey gets lastest film tickets, last but not the least is the bigfm which rewarded all listeners with gold coins
how is this !!!!!!!!!! hearing and gaining!!!
what a fun!!!

TRICOLORS AT VIZAG

TRICOLORS

Y DO WE CELEBRATE NAVY DAY IN VIZAG

December 1st, 2007

.

Navy Day is celebrated on 4th December each year. This year the Navy is riding a high tide as it were, and the most ambitious expansion plans ever undertaken by a developing Navy are in place. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh went on record to assure funds for the Navy and hoped to increase the Defence Budget from 2.5% of GNP to 3%, if the economy grows at 8%. So on the occasion of Navy day 2005, in a tribute to our Navy, we recall with pride some of the glorious achievements of the past with the hope that they would inspire the naval fraternity to even greater achievements in the future.

On the midnight of 3rd/4th December 1971, the Pakistani submarine PNS Ghazi sank off Visakhapatnam coast and later that same night the Indian Navy’s Osa class missile boats (nick named The Killers), ventured into Pakistan’s bastion at Karachi and sank three ships. The architect of the mission Admiral S M Nanda wrote of the incident in his memoirs aptly titled ‘The Man Who Bombed Karachi‘.

Luck it is said favours the brave and so it was in the 1971 war for the Indian Navy. Except when the INS Khukri with Capt M N Mulla in command went down to a watery grave off Diu on the fateful night of 9th December along with 18 officers and 176 sailors. The submarine PNS Hangor (Cdr Tasneem in command –– later Vice Admiral) torpedoed the Khukri and made a heroic gateway although he was stalked and cornered the next day by IN ships and newly acquired Seaking helicopters. The Admiral was in Delhi two years ago and had quite a tale to tell, but both countries have not released the original documents pertaining to the war.

MY CITY

November 17th, 2007

The History of Visakhapatnam
According to the history, the city was named after the god of ‘Valor-Vishakha’. It was a part of the Kalinga Kingdom, under Ashoka’s rule in 260 B.C. It passed on later to the Andhra Kings of ‘Vengi’. After this Pallava, Chola and Ganga dynasties ruled the city. In the 15th century, Vishakhapatnam became a part of the Vijayanagar Empire.

The Europeans, the Dutch, the French and the English established themselves from the 17th century onwards and used this as a major trading center to export textiles, ivory, tobacco, indigo etc. This port is well documented in the histories of these colonial powers as well as in Indian historical records. This coast played a major role during the reign of the Asaf Jahis and the Golcondas.

The City Of Destiny
Vishakhapatnam is built along the seashore of the Bay of Bengal, and is bounded and broken by the bold headland called the Dolphin’s Nose (357m above the sea level). The city boasts of a beautiful beach with a long beach road ending at nearly Bheemunipatnam on the northern end. The surrounding area is dominated on the west by the well-forested Eastern Ghats and farther east is drained by numerous rivers, among them the Godavari and Indravati.

The city is also known as "Vizag" and is surrounded by three hills, each of which has a shrine dedicated to a different religion - Venkateswara temple (also spelt as Venkateshwara) on Venkateswara Konda, Baba Ishaq Madina Dargah on Dargah Konda and Church of the Virgin Mary on Rose hill.

A Prominent Shipbuilding Centre
Vishakhapatnam is an important shipbuilding centre; the first steamer to be built in India was launched in Vishakhapatnam’s harbour in 1948. Vishakhapatnam’s port has grown greatly in importance because it has the only protected harbour on the Coromandel Coast. Agriculture is the mainstay of the region’s economy. There are major industries like Ship Building, Oil Refinery, Fertilizer, Petro Chemicals, Steel Mills and a Naval base. The suburb of Waltair, at the north end of the bay, is the site of Andhra University.

Vishakhapatnam is the true spot where one can find the beauty of Andhra. From lakes to cool beaches, from beautiful hill ranges to caves and valleys enclosures, Vishakhapatnam has them all. A visit to Vishakhapatnam will definitely be exciting, enriching and refreshing experience with all its sun kissed beaches, caves and temples.

Major Attractions of Vishakhapatnam

  • Kailasagiri
Kailasagiri is located on a hilltop and is a must to visiting place for all people visiting Vishakhapatnam. The charming hill on the seafront, affords a breath taking scenic view, especially towards Bheemunipatnam.

Festivals of Vishakhapatnam
The annual tourism event, the ‘Vishakha Utsav’ is held in Vishakhapatnam for three days from the third Friday to Sunday in the month of January.

Shopping in Vishakhapatnam
Vizag is better known as an industrial centre, but in reality it is a city of shopkeepers. For some reason shops in the same trade tend to be located next to each other, which makes shop hopping and bargain hunting easier. Earlier the area around Kurupam market with its narrow lanes and poky shops, was famous for Gold and Silver shopping.

Of late jewellery shops have sprung up in the area in Dwaraka Nagar on the other side of TSR complex. The entire stretch of road extending from Jagadamba Junction to the Old Post Office has literally countless shops selling a wide variety of items. Chandana Brothers, Bommana, Puchala, are the famous shops, which sell almost all sari varieties. The government owned / run Lepakshi is the place for handicrafts.

NAGULA CHAVITI

ON
ON HAPPY NAGULACHAVITI ON CHALIMIDI & CHIMMILI

NAGULA CHAVITI
This is observed on the fourth day of the bright fortnight in the month of either Sravana or Kartika. This is a pre-historic celebration of Naga or Serpent-worship observed throughout Andhra. Every village in Andhra has some or other Naga idol carved in stone or wood. Generally the women fast on this day and propitiate Nagas by offering fresh, un-boiled cow’s milk. Many families have ant - hills which have been worshipped for generations. Miniature silver eyes and hoods of the Serpent God are placed on the ant - hills and coconuts are broken. Some people have gold and silver images along with their family deities for daily worship. Chalimidi, Chimmili and vada pappu are the special dishes for this day. After praying to the Naga for protection of the family and children, particularly from snake bite, people smear their eyes and ears with the earth from the ant - hills. There are many Telugu folk songs sung in the praise of the Serpent God
