SELFLESS

April 18th, 2008 | by Manjula

   I was overwhelmed by the huge

 response to my first attempt of

 translating a famous Bengali poem,

 which has given me the courage to

 go for it for a second time! So, here

 I go……….

 ("NIHSWARTHA" BY "SUKUMAR ROY")

     SELFLESS

 Gopal is so jealous, Maa…………………..

         I simply can’t express!

  Didn’t even touch the share of sweets,

     Thinking it just too less!

Jyathaima sent ten Rasogolla-s,

  For both of us to share;

 Just to check its quality,

  I gulped only one, Mom dear.

 Remaining nine I divided in

  Two parts, so thoughtfully!

 Six for me and three for him……..

      But he stared angrily!

 I tried to convince more than once,

  "Listen, my little bro’!

 I did it so judiciously….

     No need of much ado!

You’re younger to me by whole three years,

  Which brings three  extra to mine;

Remaining six divided by two

      Brings three to each, fine?"

 Still he would cry and won’t accept.

     Height of selfishness!

 Finally, I had to eat all………….

  Oh! Tired with such a stress!

  ******

N.B. : JYATHAIMA means the wife of one’s

 paternal uncle, who is elder to one’s father.

    A very sweet poem. Keep translating so that non-bengali’s can also relish such rich Bengali Poetries.
