Kolhapur Land of Football Lovers
Kolhapur the city of Goddess Shree Mahalaxmi is renowned for the artistically designed traditional silver ornaments, leather footwear Kolhapuri Chapals and highly delicious signatory cuisines like Misal, Koorma Puri, Pandhara & Tambada Rasaa and Sukha Mutton etc. In the sports arena, over the years, decades and centauries Kolhapur is considered as Lords or Mecca of wrestling, beside that citizens of Kolhapur city are also famous for their love for the football and other games & sports, especially those which provides opportunities for exhibiting individual skills and shared efforts.
In the Kolhapur city there is a long illustrative history of football, the season of sports lost here for almost eight months. This year Loksabha elections had affected the competition adversely and season was limited to just four tournaments and that too with almost two months without tournament in the mid of sport season.
As usual season of Kolhapur football was started KSA [Kolhapur sports association] league with participation of 16 teams. The tournament lost for 52 league games in seven rounds and was won by Patakdil Talim “A” , but as there was gap of almost four five days after every round and junior tournament was also conducted simultaneously hence KSA league was extended for almost five months. This was surely amazing that KSA authorities not only looked over the unhappiness of football lovers of the city over the schedule of the tournament but also don’t bother about the conduction of other tournament.
Dasara cup was the next tournament of season which was won by Shivaji Tarun Mandal and Patakdil Talim were forced to remain satisfied with the second position. As Loksabha elections falls in interim hence organized were asked to suspend tournaments till the elections. Unfortunately Kolhapur football is not rich as the BCCI and could not afford to conduct tournament overseas like IPL, hence almost for two months green carpet of Kolhapur football grounds were waiting for a kick off.
In the post election period Sarnobat Cup was organized by Netaji Tarun Mandal and here again Patakdil Tamil was runner up though this time they were beaten by Khandoba Talim Mandal in the final of the tournament.
This year of Kolhapur football season will go in history with the last tournament “Mahasangram” which was with the ever highest prize money of over Rs. 5 Lakh. This time Patakdil Talim was not in mood of missing the honours so did not left any effort space vacant and defeated Khandoba Talim 3-0 in the finals match. The significant feature of this tournament was not only the sponsors offering cash prize and many individual awards in the form of consumer electronic goods but also the number of football lovers present on the ground to watch the match. Probably this was the first tournament for which rural football lovers turned in large numbers and this also results in a short boost of Kolhapur market.
