Identity Theft Myths & Facts

August 21st, 2007

The 2005 Identity Fraud Survey Report, released by the Better Business Bureau and Javelin Strategy & Research uncovers where identity theft is coming from, who gets hit, how much is lost, and more. The most interesting finding that we want to pass on is that ID theft is more prevalent offline with paper than online. That’s right, and someone close to you is more likely to steal your identity than some hacker in his mom’s basement.

Is the Internet and online shopping to blame or is it merely coincidence that identity theft has been growing steadily ever since the Internet explosion in the mid-to-late 90’s? I think that the results will shock a lot of people, and may dispel a lot of myths. This is an article everyone should take the time to read. The Better Business Bureau’s press release is available online…

I think that there is a doubt that germinates and grows like a weed when discussing e-commerce. I believe that a lot of individuals feel that when you use your credit card online that it is simply sent across cyberspace naked with no protection, or stored on some server waiting for someone to simply take. This is untrue (in most cases).

One way for some unknown entity to acquire your personal information is by conducting a transaction on an unsecure site. Other ways that this can be done is by outside sources tricking, scamming, or possibly infecting your system. One such example is the old phishing scam in which the would be thief sends out emails that look like legitimate sites such as Ebay, then try to get account information out of you with this guise. What do most of these methods have in common is that none of them happen on a secure site, not to mention that they are almost all tricks to get you to show your personal information on this unsecure site, They still however don’t grab this information off the web—no need it was offered freely to them.

Never give information out to any company or individual emailing you with some sort of issue, especially if it refers to some account and they need you to log in to fix the problem. This is a trap more than likely with some sort of key logger or something in place to capture your information. For more on "phishing" scams, check out this page…
http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/1309

This is the reason for my number one rule for any online transaction of sensitive information: NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE GIVE OUT YOUR CREDIT CARD, NUMBER, OR PERSONAL INFORMATION ON AN UNSECURE SITE. For more on how to know if a site is secure, check out our web page…
http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/826

As mentioned earlier, on a secure website you can shop freely without fear. It is far easier to steal physical information—i.e. card numbers, social security numbers, and such—that if not disposed of properly can possibly expose your personal information. Not to mention that paper methods take little to no cleverness—just a twisted desire to steel from other people.

Let’s for the sake of argument say that you take your family out to dinner and you give the server your credit card in order to pay for the bill. There is nothing other than lack of need, morals, or possibly respect for the law that stops this person from recording your card information. There are probably hundreds, if not thousands, of people who have access to your credit card information throughout an average year, and any of these people, if they wanted, could easily take this information.

This is just a quick example to help illustrate my point: it is possible for an employee of any business you deal with to obtain your personal information. But, this type of theft is second to another even more heinous form—theft from acquaintances or family. People close to you—family members, friends, or possibly business associates—probably know more about you and your accounts then any outside threats. These are the people that know your possible passwords, where you bank, and other information you might guard heavily. This is a horrible thought but it does happen. You probably would know if someone close to you had the nerve or lack of respect to do something like this. I would suggest unless there is some dire need to share this information, don’t do it—keep it hidden.

On the other hand attempting to circumnavigate the security measures that are in place and very regularly monitored on a secure website takes a tremendous amount of skill—if it can be performed at all. This is such a hard point to make for some, I’ve had people who are absolutely paranoid to enter there credit card number online, at a highly secure website, but will call in the number on a cell phone or cordless phone, that has no security measures whatsoever on a broadcasted signal. One customer was even afraid to enter her name and address but had no problem sending a check through the mail–allowing anyone with access to that envelope to get her information and checking account number.

I think what a big part of this misconception, or misplaced blame, on identity theft is due not necessarily to how the cards are getting stolen, but rather what the thieves are doing with the information once they have it. That’s where the Internet comes in. I don’t know if there was ever an easier way for someone to fraudulently assume someone’s identity than by using the World Wide Web.

Let me stress again this is not because the Internet is so unsecure, not at all, but rather by providing an easy place to use this information. Let me clarify: once someone has, let’s say, your social security number and name that they obtained in some manner discussed earlier, that’s all it takes—this person can now create an account and apply for credit cards all in your name. Another example of this sort of fraud is when a would-be thief will go to the post office and do a change of address, to one that he/she has access to and then wait for "Pay dirt". There are a number of ways to get this information. Online there’s no actual person that you have to speak with to create an account and in most cases it’s an automated system—if some of the info isn’t correct there’s no explaining to do, simply close out window and try somewhere else.

Don’t take my word for it, take a look at the results from BBB/Javelin survey. A couple of these findings are real eye openers and they are backed up with good explanations. Two jumped right out at me:

1. Average loss due to ID theft—$551 in losses when detected using online banking vs. average $4,543 when detected from paper bank statements. Due to the slow nature of monthly bank statements and the almost instant access of online banking, users see abnormalities, much sooner and act to correct them.

2. The BBB’s recommendation for protecting yourself from ID theft

* Replace paper bills, statements and checks with Internet (paperless) versions. Consider moving to an electronic bill payment service, such as your bank or biller’s web site, and stop sending signed paper checks through the mail.

* Visit your bank’s site to monitor account activity on a regular basis.

The fact that the BBB actually recommends that you use online banking and bill paying as a safer alternative to traditional banking practices says a lot. I realize this is a departure from the way you may have banked for who knows how many years, but if you are concerned about ID theft then it may be a course of action you should take. As I mentioned previously, and I can’t stress it enough, you’re safer using an online server than you are using paper methods.

Lara and the art of leaving

August 21st, 2007

Lara
Brian Lara leaves the international field for the final time
You could never accuse of Brian Lara of lacking in timing. And if his retirement announcement was made without customary flourish, it didn’t lack drama. It was the most delectable of late cuts: perfectly conceived and deftly executed, it left those in its presence breathless.

There was no gasp, because it took time to register. He dropped it in casually, just after he had finished answering his last question and when notebooks were being put away. He leaned forward, almost as if he was preparing to leave, and whispered these words into the mike: "I gave extensive consideration to this," he said "I want everybody to know that on Saturday I’ll be playing my last international match."
Journalists turned around and looked enquiringly at each other. Did I hear it right? Did he say merely international or was there a one-day before it. Some rushed to the dais to confirm it with Imran Khan, the West Indies media manager, who nodded his head. Some shoved miniature bats and notebooks to be autographed. But Lara had made it clear that there would be no further questions, and none were asked.

The very first question had been about his future and Lara had cut the questioner off. "This is about today’s match," he had said firmly, and had repeated the refrain whenever the subject had veered towards it. However, he had fielded other broader questions, about West Indies cricket, about Ramnaresh Sarwan - the leading contender for the captaincy - and one about how he would like to be remembered. Given what transpired, the question now seems prescient though, to be honest, it was asked in the context of his one-day career.

Lara’s answer was typical of him. He didn’t bother mouthing platitudes about service to the country and the game. "I would like to be remembered as someone who came out there and tried to entertain." That was the truth about Lara. It was his essence. Over a 17-year career, lots of his relationships — with the board, with selectors, with the media and even his own team-mates - were stretched and tested. But one bond remained unshakable, that between a conjurer and his spellbound audience. You fell for him instantly, and were hooked for life.

With hindsight, it is obvious now that the press conference had so many touches of a farewell. "I am also proud," said Lara. "I have been knocked down so many times, as a player and as a person, and I have had the strength, I suppose that has come from my parents, to be able to pick myself each and every single time and go out there in the face of adversity and try my best and perform. I didn’t read it up in a book. It’s deep down and it’s part of my family trait."

Time and again during the press conference, Lara was provoked to bring his dispute with the administrators in the open. He refused the bait. But what he left unsaid, said a lot. "Whoever is the new captain, must receive the support he deserves." When asked if he received the support he needed, he merely said it was no time to cry over spilt milk. Success in the international arena, he said, depended on much more than the 11 players on the field but, when pressed further, he insisted that "this was not the forum to discuss this."

There will be another press conference a couple of days later, and Lara would surely be there. This time though, his inquisitors will be much better prepared.

BIA closed for business at night

August 21st, 2007

BIA

A Sri Lankan Airlines Airbus takes off from the Bandaranaike International Airport, 03 May 2007 as military helicopter gunships wait in the background. Sri Lankan Airlines 04 May 2007 announced the stopping of its night flights out of the airport following fears of a repeat Tamil Tiger air raid on the military airbase which shares a runway with the international airport located at Katunayake, just outside the capital Colombo. AFP

Mixed reactions from private sector experts but there is consensus the move should be temporary with defence authorities asked to get their act together; Lanka’s vision of becoming an air hub gets more remote as India is likely to fast track its efforts

Seen and heard

Since LTTE had, as per some experts, used the full moon light to carry out its air strike in Colombo, the Defence authorities are busy getting the superior 3D radar system in place before the Poson Poya.
At a top level meeting it was disclosed in somewhat lighter vein that privately owned tall buildings should switch off the red signal used to warn commercial aircraft in the hope that LTTE aircrafts without such signals would crash on to one of those buildings and destroy themselves.
With the country plunging into darkness every time after suspected LTTE air raids, experts maintain that the switching off lights was a tactic used during the World War 1 as at that time, lights were used to identify certain landmark locations. These experts said that with night vision technology and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) switching off lights only helps the mission of an enemy aircraft and switching on lights would help country’s defences.

LTTE air attacks-propelled closure of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) from Thursday has caused an equally devastating concern among the country’s private sector which is insisting that the move should be temporary to minimize the serious economic impact.

The Government last week said that the BIA from May 10 would be closed for business from 10.30 p.m. to 4.30 a.m. as a security measure. The move follows the third air attack in a month by the LTTE in the early hours of April 29. This decision also follows leading international airlines beforehand deciding to restrict their services to day flights to ensure safety of their passengers while at least one airline has suspended operations fully.

The recommendation to close the airport at night had apparently come from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) which some analysts said could be due to the fact that it had less confidence of security for passenger aircraft flying in and out at night. However it is unlikely that CAA proposed the move without having a consultation with the defence authorities. It is ironic that the country’s intelligence establishment got to know about LTTE’s air power as way back as early 2004 and three years hence the nation is seeing only knee-jerk and amateurish reactions as well as lot of finger pointing at others.

The closure of the only international airport according to many analysts was a big set back as it seriously affects the country’s image globally as well as a severe blow to investor and business confidence. The adverse publicity globally has spread like wild fire. Unfortunately Sri Lanka also got bad press as the Fortune magazine’s South East Asian Correspondent was in Colombo when the third air raid and indiscriminate firing by troops on the ground took place resulting in an article titled “ The flying tigers of Tamil Eelam buzz Sri Lanka” getting wide publicity.

The move, be it temporary or a longer phenomenon, has also dealt a severe blow to Colombo’s efforts to position itself as an attractive air hub in South Asia. The move will also make Colombo the first airport if not among a handful to be closed at night on security reasons. Some international airports don’t operate at night to ensure its citizens are spared of noise pollution.

A CEO of a top conglomerate however noted that the closure was the best move provided it was temporary. “It is better to be safe than sorry and the closure is a wise move given the current realities,” he said. It was pointed out that since defence authorities are currently unable to manage the LTTE air threat confidently and securely, implications of a passenger aircraft being mistakenly hit by air defence fire from the ground could be disastrous with long term consequences.

“At present security must take precedence but we hope the defence authorities would get their act together sooner than later and come up with a successful mechanism to counter the serious air threat from the LTTE. In that context we expect the closure of the airport at night would be temporary. A permanent arrangement however would seriously impact the country and the economy at large,” the CEO emphasized.

It is learnt that the Government is busy to secure a Three Dimensional (3D) radar system that could track the altitude of an enemy aircraft as opposed to the 2D equipment, which reportedly need to be rebooted after every eight hours. More sophisticated fighter jets for the Air Force are also on the cards.

This CEO however dismissed the BIA closure derailing the country’s efforts to position itself as an air hub. “We haven’t tapped that potential for a long time and I don’t think the closure has a major impact. There are several other long standing issues that need to be addressed if the country is serious about becoming a true air hub for the South Asian region,” he added. It was also pointed out that more Indians were using Colombo as a hub to connect to rest of the world largely due to pricing and lack of air services, two factors which would soon disappear in tandem with the rapid boom in aviation industry in India.

An international transport expert who is also attached to a different conglomerate said the closure of the airport was purely reactive rather than making a proactive stance to deal with the LTTE air threat. “What we are telling the world is that Sri Lanka doesn’t have the right infrastructure and the defence expertise to counter an air attack by a terrorist group,” he added. This move certainly will have a spill over effect on other sectors such as shipping, insurance and the country’s overall risk profile and rating.

It was also pointed out that the closure, even though temporary, will be a setback to past and future efforts to position Sri Lanka as a sea and air hub in South Asia and the Middle East. “Even with certain inherent weaknesses we have been positioning Colombo as a 24-hour-open-gateway to the rest of the world. From May 10 we will be telling a different story to the world,” he added.

Aviation industry experts said that the closure of the airport was amateurish and it was far from a professional and confident approach to the LTTE air threat. He said that the closure only helps LTTE leader V. Prabhakaran’s cause rather than negating it. “With the mere use of a few single-engine aircraft and targeting some select installations the LTTE has demonstrated it could virtually shut down Sri Lanka’s only international airport. The closure of airport is perhaps is what LTTE expected eventually,” he opined adding that the amateurish ways of responding to the threat does not speak well of the country’s defence capabilities.

It was also pointed out that the chaos on April 29 morning could have been avoided had the defence authorities didn’t issue directions to armed personnel to fire indiscriminately. It was claimed that some soldiers even used their AK 47s to fire to the air at random.

This expert questioned the timing of the closure as well. “What assurances the authorities have that the LTTE won’t mount an air raid just before 10.30 pm and just after 4.30 am,” he queried.

Many private sector experts agree (who also say many other professionals and civil society would confide) the three air raids by the LTTE were as the world famous Fortune magazine reported, yet another embarrassment to (President Mahinda) Rajapakse’s dysfunctional government, which is just the latest in a long list of poor administrations.

Mother’s Day

August 21st, 2007

Mothers Day is a special day for honoring Mothers through out the world. The Mother’s Day holds great significance for all of us. As usual, the Mothers Day 2007 will be celebrated on May 13th, 2007 in the U. S. whereas the U. K. will celebrate the Mothering Sunday (Mother’s Day) , 2006 on date March, 18th

Once upon a time there was a child ready to be born.

One day the child asked God,
"They tell me you are going to send me to earth tomorrow but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?"

God replied, "Among the many angels, I have chosen one for you. she will be waiting for you and will take care of you".

But said the child, "tell me here in Heaven I don’t do anything else but sing and smile. That’s what I need to be happy!"

God said, "Your angel will sing for you every day. And you will feel your angel’s love and be happy".

"And, said the child, ”How am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me, if I don’t know the language that men talk?"

”That’s easy", God, "Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak".

The child looked up at God saying, ”And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?"

God smiled at the child saying, "your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray".

The child said, "I’ve heard on earth there are bad men. who will protect me?"

God put his arm around the child, saying, "your angel will defend you, even if it means risking life!"

The child looked sad, saying, "But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore".

God hugged the child, "Your angel will always talk to you about me and will teach you the way to come back to me, even though I will always be next to you".

At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from earth could already be heard.

The child in a hurry, asked softly, "Oh God, if I am about to leave now please tell me my angel’s name!"

God replied, "Your angel’s name is of no importance… you will simply call her MOMMY !!"

* WHY WE LOVE MOM

Mom and Dad were watching TV when Mom said, "I’m tired, and it’s getting late. I think I’ll go to bed"

She went to the kitchen to make sandwiches for the next day’s lunches.

Rinsed out the popcorn bowls, took meat out of the freezer for supper the following evening, checked the cereal box levels, filled the sugar container, put spoons and bowls on the table and started the coffee pot for brewing the next morning.

She then put some wet clothes in the dryer, put a load of clothes into the washer, ironed a shirt and secured a loose button

She picked up the game pieces left on the table, put the phone back on the charger and put the telephone book into the drawer.

She watered the plants, emptied a wastebasket and hung up a towel to dry.

She yawned and stretched and headed for the bedroom. She stopped by the desk and wrote a note to the teacher, counted out some cash for the field trip, and pulled a textbook out from hiding under the chair.

She signed a birthday card for a friend, addressed and stamped the envelope and wrote a quick note for the grocery store. She put both near her purse.

Mom then washed her face with 3 in 1 cleanser, put on her Night solution & age fighting moisturizer, brushed and flossed her teeth and filed her nails.

Dad called out, "I thought you were going to bed."

"I’m on my way," she said.

She put some water into the dog’s dish and put the cat outside, then made sure the doors were locked and the patio light was on.

She looked in on each of the kids and turned out their bedside lamps and TVs, hung up a shirt, threw some dirty socks into the hamper, and had a brief conversation with the one up still doing homework.

In her own room, she set the alarm; laid out clothing for the next day, straightened up the shoe rack. She added three things to her 6 most important things to do list. She said her prayers, and visualized the accomplishment of her goals.

About that time, Dad turned off the TV and announced to no one in particular. "I’m going to bed."

And he did…without another thought.

Musharraf asked to resign

August 21st, 2007

ISLAMABAD, May 12: Condemning what they called the worst form of state terrorism unleashed in Karachi, opposition leaders on Saturday demanded an immediate resignation by President Pervez Musharraf.

In their separate statements, former prime minister and Pakistan People’s Party chairperson Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) chief Nawaz Sharif, Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal president Qazi Hussain Ahmed and Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf chairman Imran Khan said that ‘terrorism’ in Karachi was pre-planned and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement had been given a freehand to kill innocent people, destroy peace and attack media organisations and journalists in Karachi.

Ms Bhutto condemned what she described as “the civil war-like conditions created by the ruling party in Karachi”.

In a statement issued here, Ms Bhutto claimed that 14 of those killed during violence in the city on Saturday were workers of the Pakistan People’s Party.

“The sight of the sons of Pakistan bleeding to death on the street of Karachi is a shocking insight into the cruelty of the present regime,” she said.

She called upon the Supreme Court to take suo motu notice of the incident. She demanded registration of cases against the law-enforcement agencies personnel and Muttahida Qaumi Movement members involved in the violence, their arrest and prosecution.

Speaking at a hurriedly called press conference in London, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif said that the real face of dictatorship had been exposed.

Mr Sharif said workers of the PML-N along with those of other parties had suffered fatal casualties and many of them were seriously injured.

“But the sacrifices of these people will not go waste,” he added.

The PML-N chief said the Chief Justice of Pakistan had been detained once again and this time by the Sindh government on the orders of Gen Musharraf.

“They even tried to abduct him in a helicopter. Lawyers were stopped by armed gangs from reaching the Sindh High Court. Some women lawyers were treated in a most shameful manner,” he alleged.

He said Gen Musharraf on Saturday had made a dangerous attempt to divide the people of Pakistan.

“I vehemently condemn all these acts of state terrorism,” He added.

According to Mr Sharif, the most heartening outcome of the events in Karachi had been the utter refusal by the patriotic people of the city to side with dictatorship and gangsterism.

He said all sober and patriotic members of the MQM stayed away from the state-sponsored rally, which consisted of only a few hundred people and was a total flop.

“I want to salute these patriotic people of Karachi and Sindh on behalf of all Pakistan for sending a clear message that they will not side with dictatorship but with the constitution,” he declared.

Describing the current struggle as a movement, he said it would only gain momentum and the people would not rest till there was rule of law and democracy in Pakistan.

General Musharraf, he said, had used the institution of the army to fulfil his ‘fascist ambitions’ and “now there is real danger that people could turn against the army and this must be avoided at all costs”.

He said the entire world had witnessed the true face of dictatorship in Pakistan. If allowed to continue it would completely destroy Pakistan and destabilise the region.

Qazi Hussain said: “We condemn the provincial government’s direct involvement in disturbing the law and order situation in Karachi.”

He said that no military general would be allowed to take over from Gen Musharraf to start another reign of terrorising the nation.

Imran Khan said that the MQM was an ethnic party which was involved in terrorist activities. He said that Gen Musharraf had become the security risk for the country. “Time has come that Gen Musharraf and the military should quit.”

He said that TV channels in their live transmission had clearly shown the activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement firing and beating lawyers and the general public who were there to welcome Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry.

Chaudhry Nisar said the government had lost its credibility and the law and order situation in the country demanded Gen Musharraf and his government to step down immediately.

In Karachi, Naheed Khan, political-secretary to Benazir Bhutto, claimed that Muttahida Qaumi Movement ‘terrorists’ fired on her procession near Aysha Bawani College. According to her, the terrorists taking position on roofs of a college and Sea Breeze Plaza resorted to indiscriminate firing on the procession.

She said that gates of the Saddar police station were locked from inside and shots were fired on the procession from the police station, where MQM ‘terrorists’ had taken shelter.

She said dozens of teargas shells were fired from the roof of the police station, leaving scores of workers, including women, unconscious.

She said more than 200 People’s Party workers had been trapped beneath the Baloch Colony bridge and held hostage by the MQM activists.

MMA leader Liaquat Baloch said that politics of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement were based on violence and bloodshed. He said the MQM was a coalition partner of the ruling party and its decision to take out the rally was an attempt to create turmoil and anarchy in the country.

Mr Baloch said the government was trying to create an environment to impose emergency in the country, adding that people of the country were united to against the dictatorship.

Presidential Elections.who will be India’s next?

August 21st, 2007

The tenure of President Kalam comes to an end in July and a frantic search is on for his successor.

President Kalam has ruled himself out of the race for Rashtrapati Bhavan
With Kalam out of the race, who will be India’s next President?

Pujari President
Contrary to what the Left says, being a non-partisan in politics is an essential requirement for the President’s post

Too much to ask for a woman Prez?
None of the parties in this great land of Devi worshippers have found one single woman’s name on their list of probables.

The making of the President of India
India will get her next President in July. But this will happen only after several more twists and turns.

Contenders
N R Narayana Murthy as candidate for President of India
Pranab top contender for post
Urban India wants Kalam as Prez
NDA may field candidate: Rajnath
Opposition to lobby for Shekhawat

The perks of being a President
Hit’s the ultimate perk that comes with being President of India. As the First Citizen, all 200,000 square feet of floor area, with its 1,700 million bricks and 3 million cubic feet of stone are yours for the taking for five whole years. And don’t forget the sprawling Mughal Garden, spread over 13 acres. Prime property doesn’t get better than this.

The splendour of the Rashtrapati Bhavan is larger than life. Few official residential premises of the Head of the State in the world can match the it in terms of its size, vastness and magnificence. Its breathtaking architecture, with Roman, Mughal, Buddhist and European influences, is a work of art.

‘World passport’ to nowhere…

August 21st, 2007

HYDERABAD: A ‘World Passport’ from a ‘World Government’ on the World Wide Web. Interested? A city lad got just that from a website that assured it was really real. But instead of arriving in the US, the passport landed him in the cooler when Begumpet airport officials stopped his flight of fancy right at the immigration counter.

In what is clearly an internet fraud, Mohd Lal Amer was duped by the website www.worldservice.org, which gave him the ‘World Passport’ for a sum of $ 600. Amer got it in April through a courier from the US. Till the immigration officials stopped him, the 23-year-old believed that the ‘World Passport’ he got from the ‘World Government’ in the US was a genuine one. The incident happened on May 18 and Amer was later handed over to the local police.

When Amer, a resident of Mangapathi Towers at Saidabad Colony, booked his air tickets to Washington through a travel agency at Saidabad, it was taken for granted that the passport and also a visa sticker on it were genuine.
But what takes the cake is what happened next: When he reported at the Air-India counter, he was even given a boarding pass! It was only at the immigration counter that the ‘World Passport’ was noticed and he was detained. Accordingto sources, the passport even had a machine readable bar code.

In order to get the ‘World Passport’, all one needs to do is submit an application at www.worldservice.org. The website claims that the passport has found acceptance in as many as 170 countries, including India and also the US.
A passport with a validity of eight years costs $ 100, while a world identity card, a world birth card, and a world birth certificate could be bought for $ 20 each.

The website claims that the World Service Authority’s office was in Washington DC and with a branch in China. There are 19 visa pages in the 30-page passport document and resembles a real one.

"We have never got such a strange case before. We checked with the passport authorities and confirmed that there is no ‘World Passport’. We will decide whether this case can be handed over to the cyber crime investigation wing," Begumpet inspector J Subbarami Reddy said.

Benoit-Larry King Live - Must Read Recap

August 21st, 2007

Benoit-Larry
- Jericho called Benoit the Michael Jordan of wrestling and credited Benoit with changing the style of American wrestling in many ways.

- Jericho said that Benoit idolized Daniel and his other kids and that he talked about them all the time. He even said that if he needed to leave his kids with someone, he’d leave them with Benoit and that’s why all of this is so shocking.

- Larry asked about Daniel’s mental status. Jericho said that he heard about Daniel having Fragile X right after the tragedy and said that the symptoms of the disease did fit Daniel but that he wasn’t sure if the Fragile X stuff was true or if Daniel was just shy like his dad.

- They ran a clip which mentioned how wrestlers are so much more likely to due than football players.

- Larry King mentioned how wrestlers are tremendous athletes even though it’s all a show. Jericho said that people may not understand how hard it is to be a wrestler.

- Larry asked for details on how wrestling works. Jericho called it "show business with an athletic edge."

- Cena said it’s an athletic form of entertainment.

- The topic shifted to steroids. Larry played a clip from when Hulk Hogan was on the show in 2000. Hogan said that steroids and drugs do exist in wrestling and that drugs are available and guys often need them to deal with the pain of the business.

- Larry asked Bret if he thinks drugs and steroids have anything to do with the Benoit situation. Bret said that until someone can prove that was the case, he won’t point the finger to steroids. He said that WWE has a drug test in place and that Benoit passed. Bret seemed to downplay the role of steroids, saying most of the guns may be on growth hormone.

- Cena said that there is no proven knowledge of wrestlers lashing out due to steroids. He said that Benoit’s actions took place over a weekend and that it wasn’t a roid rage case. Cena blamed the media and said that it’s not right to blame WWE for this.

- Jericho said that steroids are not like PCP. You don’t get rage the second after you take them. He then brought up how caffeine addiction can also lead to all kinds of mental changes and that nobody would believe caffeine could cause rage or this type of incident even though the symptoms indicate that they could.

Maya’s first strike at Mulayam

Maya’s first strike at Mulayam: Centre told Anil Ambani SEZ against rules
In one of its first acts after taking charge in Lucknow, the Mayawati government has applied the brakes on a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) project in Noida being promoted by the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG).

UP Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh told reporters that the state government today conveyed to the Centre that guidelines were not followed in proposing allotment of land to ADAG for a multi-product SEZ in Noida. The site identified for the project, he said, is not contiguous which is a basic requirement for allotment.

The SEZ was proposed to be developed on 1,200 acres.

Singh said that a three-member committee headed by the Principal Secretary (Finance) found that the land proposed to be allotted was not contiguous. “There exists a road in the middle of the land,” he said.

The Mayawati cabinet, which held its second meeting today, also set up a high-level committee under the Industrial Development Commissioner to re-evaluate every proposal of the previous Mulayam government on SEZs and High-Tech City projects.

Singh said that land deals for SEZs would henceforth take place directly between the investor and the farmer to avoid a “Singur-like situation”.

Unfazed by the decision, the ADAG said it was confident of resolving any issue through talks, reports PTI.

“We look forward to discussing the matter with the Uttar Pradesh government and resolve any issue,” an ADAG spokesperson said. “We have won the Noida SEZ on a transparent and competitive basis. This is one of the most important projects for the development of the state,” he said.

The Mayawati government’s decision is the first instance of a state government trying to revoke in-principle approval granted to an SEZ project.

While there are three notified SEZs in UP, eight projects have formal approvals and 10, including the ADAG SEZ, have in-principle approval.

When contacted, Commerce Ministry officials said they were yet to receive an official communique from the UP government on the SEZ matter. But officials said the state government was within its right to review clearances for SEZs with in-principle approvals.

If the Mayawati government decides to revisit the three notified SEZs and eight projects which have formal approval on the basis of the Industrial Development Commissioner’s report expected in two weeks, there may be trouble.

Under the SEZ Act, a project only gets formal approval after all land has been acquired and all other formalities fulfilled at the state and Centre level.

“Once the project has formal approval, even if the state government wants to revoke clearances granted earlier, it cannot. The only way out would be litigation,” an official said. The ten SEZs with in-principle approvals include 3 IT SEZs and a 3287-hectare multi-product Purva SEZ at Bhadoi.

Seven of the eight projects with formal approvals awaiting final notification from the Centre are IT SEZs proposed by the likes of Wipro, HCL and NIIT in Noida and Greater Noida. A non-conventional energy SEZ proposed by Moser Baer has also got formal approval.

China again gives a Shock to India?

China denies visa to IAS officer
New Delhi: The Sino-Indian spat over Arunachal Pradesh has taken a new twist. The government has cancelled a trip for 107 IAS officers to China for a mid-career training programme.

Sources have told CNN-IBN that China refused to give a visa to one officer in the batch who is from Arunachal Pradesh.

They were prepared to give visas to the others. But the government preferred to cancel the visit altogether.

This is the first time IAS officers were to be sent to China.

China’s denial of a visa to a government official from Arunachal once again reinforces its claim over the entire state and not just the disputed tract of Tawang.

Chinese Ambassador to India Sun Yuxi first went public with that extremely controversial claim on CNN IBN last year.

“In our position the whole of what you call the state of Arunachal Pradesh is Chinese territory and Tawang (district) is only one place in it and we are claiming all of that-that’s our position,” Sun Yuxi had said.

Long march to settlement

China cites the Tawang Monastery, one of the last vestiges of Mahayana Buddhism, as evidence that the mountainous district of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh once belonged to Tibet and that India should hand it back to help settle the row.

The dispute over the 3,500-km India-China border led to the 1962 war. New Delhi disputes Beijing’s rule over 38,000 sq km of barren, icy and uninhabited land on the Tibetan plateau, which China seized from India in the 1962 war.

China, for its part, claims 90,000 sq km of territory in Arunachal Pradesh.

Within that disputed area is Tawang and its monastery. The neighbours have held several rounds of talks since 1981 to resolve the dispute but have so far failed to make progress.

Last year, they agreed on an 11-point roadmap to settle the border row in light of booming bilateral trade and growing ties.

The proposal was seen as an attempt towards accepting the status quo and hammering out a swap whereby China would give up claims in the east in return for India’s recognition of Chinese sovereignty in the strategic Aksai Chin area in the west.

Although both sides seemed amenable to such a deal, Beijing’s demand for Tawang - and India’s refusal to part with any populated territories - has created a stumbling block.
