Eye Donation-A Poet’s Appeal

In: Education & Reference

Poet Maria Teresa is a well known Tamil poet famous for her poems on Nature and Humanism. Her appeal for Eye Donation is translated from Tamil by me,and given below

One person donated
Two persons received
LIGHT!

Build a mobile memorial
for you
Donate eyes

A body cremated
Two persons got life
Eye donation

Should Earth and Fire
swallow your eyes?
Donate them.

Even after death
we can see
Donating eyes.

Not for dust
Give them power
Donate eyes.

Sky has only one
You have got two suns
Why allow darkness prevail?

Rare opportunity
We can live twice
Donate eyes.

From deceased body
Dazzling light
Donate eyes.

Body may decay
Eyes will shine
Let us take a pledge.

Any body can do
Adorable charity
Eye donation.

Haiku Poems of Thamizhanban

Thamizhanban is a prominent poet of Tamilnadu, who has contributed volumes of Modern and modernist poems in Tamil and celebrated by millions of Tamil readers throughout the world.

He has produced meaningful and thought-provoking Haikus and they can be seen in the volume titled"Crescents of Sun"(Sooriyap Piraikal).

I have translated some Haikus and do hope it may be of interest to you also.

Satire;

The Dawn’s feet bound in chain

The Moon is varnishing

The Jail’s iron bars.

The writings invited for

A Royal dinner-

The writer’s soul hanging in the pen-nib.

I just dug a fountain in my mind-

Thousand people rushed

To sit and drink.

Self-pity:

I was lying as a corpse

Felt immense pleasure

Never intended to stand again.

Metaphysics:

Death–

The torch of the soul

In the journey of life.

Personality-builder:

To the person who fell down ten times

Mother Earth kissed and told:

Already you have stood erect nine times!

Again andf again

The moonlight fell on it-

The rock blossomed into a flower!

Realism:

Darkness remained in the hands

Which pushed out

The night.

Poetry –

Possesses thousand hands

Its begging bowl has a lot of holes!

Irony:

The sky is beautiful!

The Earth is also beautiful!

I have a loaf of bread in my hand.

The fishes in the glass tanks

Dreaming much about

Rubbing shoulders with oceans.

A CHRISTMAS GIFT TO TAMIL READERS

Just now I received a book from learned Professor and a myriad-talented genius Dr.S.Innasi, whom I revere most titled “Thiruththondar Kappiyam”. This is not one among the thousands of books, published in Tamil.
It is an epic of grandeur, written in elegant Tamil, whose diction and verse-style may only be compared with that of Kamparamayanam.
The question may arise in your mind-what? An epic? At this age?
In twentieth century many poets have written mini-epics.
Starting from Bharati’s Panchali sapatham, Barathidasan’s Pantiyan parisu & many other narratives long poems we may come across hundreds of such variety. Those mini-epics or modern ballads are still celebrated by lovers of Tamil poetry.

Pulavar Kuzhanthai’s Ravana Kaaviyam is an illustrious example for epics. One may disagree with its contents, but can not ignore its superb composition and poetic beauty.
Pulavar Kuzhanthai can be compared to Kampan for his poetic genius. This is not my opinion-but the opinion of Raa.Pi.Sethupillai a propagandist of Kamparamayanam, who dedicated his life to propagate the grandeur of its matter and manner.

Pulavar Kuzhanthai stands unique among Tamil poets for his artistic creation, which will stand long for centuries.

Our adorable Professor Innasi may undoubtedly be called as the Kampan of Twenty -first century for his epic, par excellence,Thiruththontar Puranam.

When people are declaring that conventional poetry is slowly becoming an extinct species, can you imagine a poet
composing 4155 poems in accordance with prosodic rules with
sublime diction, picturesque imagery and captivating similes? Our esteemed Professor Innasi has done it.
In this article I wish to give just an introduction about the poet and epic.
I will give a detailed analysis and appreciation, later.
Who is Professor Innasi? What does his epic constitute and narrate?
As I8 have already mentioned, our beloved Professor Innasi is a myriad-talented genius. How?
He is a Tamil Scholar of international repute; a playwright;
A lyricist dramaturgist; a short-story writer whose stories were published by popular journals including Kalki and Anandavikatan; an eloquent orator; a scholar of many arts.
The first and foremost among his merits is –he is a humanist.
This epic describes the life of Devasagayam Pillai, his struggle and assassination by his enemies.
The epic-hero was born in 1712 at Nattaalam situated at Kalkulam Taluk of Kanyakumari district as the son of Vasudevan Namboodiri and Revathi. He was named as Nilaknta Pillai by his parents, and had earned a remarkable knowledge of Tamil as well as Sanskrit. He was a staunch devotee of Goddess Kali.He gained a topmost post in Udayagiri fort, by the King of South Travancore, Marthandavarman.
A Dutch commandant, who was highly skilled in manufacturing handguns, by name De Lennoy, was appointed as a trainer for Travancore warriors. By getting his close friendship Neelakanta Pillai came to know about Jesus and His teachings. He got baptized and became a sincere follower of Christian Faith. The epic describes the laudable service he rendered to the downtrodden as well as the trials and tribulations he underwent after he
adopted Christianity.
In 13-2-1749 he was captivated as a prisoner and after being tortured in the name of inquiry, he was shot dead and buried in the St. Xavier’s Church. In 1913 his bones were preserved and in 1976 a temple was built in his memory and his sword was kept there.
Many folk-tales and folk-ballads are prevalent in that lo0cation which are centered about the miracles he performed during his life time and many people believe still he is performing wonders.
He is recommended for the award of Sainthood.
Already there are two epics on Christianity. They are Thempavani by Veeramaamunivar and Ratchaniya yathrikam of H.A.Krishna pillai. They describe sequences which happened outside of Tamilnadu. But this epic describes the life and mission of Devasagayam Pillai of Tamilnadu. This has helped a lot for the poet to make it as an Epic of the soil.
The descriptions of Nature and sequences about love life and family are realistic in this epic.
The epic is divided into four cantos.

First Canto on Youth stage.
Second Canto on Leadership.
Third Canto on Tolerance.
Fourth canto on Divinity.
Each Canto is divided into ten subdivisions called ‘patalam’.
If I venture to describe the whole epic it may become monotonous due to my lack of communications skills.
So I will put separate posts to explain the innate beauty of the epic later.
Here I wish to give the very first verse composed as an invocation, just for an example about the other verses.

 A Commander of Grace
Who has an infinite variety of images
A Nucleus of all living beings
 An author of sacred scripture
which extends all the noble thoughts of this world
A donor of all things we demand
 Our Father
 An abode of divinity
 A possessor of endless treasures
I bow down His Holy feet and begin this epic.

My Birthday Wish

They say I will be sixty-one
When comes December fourteen
Every year my age is increasing
Energy and strength are decreasing
Reminding me I am loosing
Chances and time for achieving.

What is the thing I wish to achieve?
Nothing but your love and friendship.
I tried to be sincere and trustworthy
Whenever I had the occasion for it.
If at all I had done anything
Against your wish on any moment
Excuse me! Please let me know it!
Give me a chance to correct myself!

Who am I? A tiny droplet
In the ocean of Time.
What are my wishes and ambitions?
Just I wish to see
A world without war,
The mankind united
Crossing the boundaries.

To know the meaning of
 ‘Refugees’ and ‘beggars’
Children should ask for a dictionary!

Poverty and disease
Should be a past history
Quite unknown to any person!

This is my wish!
Nothing more!
These things, I am sure
Can not be gained as birthday gifts!

If these wishes become
The ambition of every person
In a single day we can achieve
Without a bloodshed revolution!
With these thoughts
I leave you now!
Hope you also wish these things!
Come on!
Let us move a step for it!
Nothing more I want as my birthday gift!

Lapse of Memory

Why did I hate it?
Which things did I hate?
Whom did I hate?
Everything forgotten..
But..Hatred is persisting..

Which were the objects of my desire?
Oh! It is forgotten..
Desire is still continuing
Its process in my mind.

Which is the goal
For my travel?
I am sorry I have forgotten it.
But my travel is a never-ending one.

I am trying to recollect
The things which I have forgotten
My lapses of memory
Are still continuing
By which alone
There continues a lot of
Friendships
And a few hostilities!

India that was demolished

India that was demolished

December-6 is a day, which makes every Indian to self-criticize, and introspects. We have to follow Gandhi in maintaining harmony and amity in our country by showing
Restraint in religious issues.
Refraining from unwanted debates in matters pertaining religion is a better and safer way to preserve our cultural integration.
Pon.Selvaganapathy wrote a poem titled”India that was demolished” after the destruction of the “structure”(as told by cunning politicians).
While handling a burning issue, which is very sensitive, utmost care should be taken to avoid further provocation.
Selvaganapathy shows his maturity and tolerance in this poem titled”India that was demolished.”
He advises the readers to root out religious intolerance from their minds.
We surely hope such a day will come and we are going to see unity and tolerance prevailing in our country so as to make us a big power.

They call us “Atheists”
    Have you ever heard of
    An atheist who has demolished
    A worshipping place?
    No.Definitely a big no.
    Ironically history narrates that
    Devout and pious worshippers
    Had demolished
    The worshipping place of others
    Trespassing the
    Boundaries of Humanism.

Oh! Is it the proper way
    For God-believers
    To show respect to the
    Supreme Being
    Like this?

 Rightly portrays Ramayana
    Monkeys that behaved like
    Cultured men
    Today-
    See what happened to the
    Sanctimonious Ramabhakthas
    Who boast to be pious?
    And behaved like beasts
    The Maxim says:
    Wherever Rama be
    That place should be
    Considered as Ayodhya
    These ‘Super’Hindus say

    ‘Wherever there is a masjid
     That place is Ayodhya.’
    Dedicated Hindus
    Demolished the ‘structure’
    Alas!
The frenzied mob did not know
     They damaged India itself.

 My dear fellow citizens!
     Come on! Act immediately!
     Demolish! Ruin! Destroy!
     Nothing else but
     Your own worshipping places

 First of all
    The Masjids
    The temples
    The churches
    And
   The Gurudhwaras
         Strongly built in our minds!

POET AMALATHASAN

Amalathasan is a dedicated poet with a zest and zeal to propagate patriotism
and humanism among Singaporeans. For the past four decades he is doing a lot of contribution to Tamil literature. He is the first among equals in other languages and for this his poems serve as monumental examples.
His compilation of poems under the title "Pullaanguzhal" (The Flute) reveals his artistic skill of producing rhythmic creations. This volume contains Sixty poems under the following subdivisions:
Language,
Country,
The Buds,
Love,
Nature,
 Society.
There are seven poems in this volume, which sing the glory of Mother Tamil.
Paaluurum Thamizh (The Nectarous Tamil) deifies Mother Tamil. The poet resembles Bharatidasan in his deep love to Tamil language, when he says:
No survival sans she,
No other possession except she,
No space in my Bosom
Except for her.

The next poem in this subdivision, titled,"Narunthamizh"(The Buds Riser) emphasizes the importance of Tamil language to Tamils.
Is there Salvation to the Tamils
Except through Tamils?
Is there any other tongue
Which can excel Tamil on earth?

These questions wish to make a deep impact among Tamils who ignore their language in every sphere.
Vaazhga Thamizh (Long Live Tamil), the next poem, also hails Tamil with devotion.
Thamizhilee paadinaal paadu (Sing only in Tamil) instructs the Tamils to sing in their mothertongue, Tamil. The Tamil music has a history of Three thousand years. Sangam anthology, Cilappathikaram, Thevaaram and Thivviyaprabhantham are concrete examples of the uniqueness of Tamil music. But it is a pity that Tamils prefer to sing in Telugu. If this attitude among Tamils continues then Tamil music may perish. The poet gives a timely advice through this poem.
The other poems in this subdivision, Enakkenna  kuraichal  (I have no wants),Engal Thamizhmozhi(Our Tamil Language)and Cemmozhiyaanathu Thamizh (Tamil now Classical language) not only illustrate the poet’s language loyalty but also motivate the readers to adore their mothertongue.
There are five poems in the subdivision Naadu (The Country). Excluding Malaiyagam (Malaysia) all the other poems sing in praise of Singapore. The poet wishes to inculcate patriotism through these poems. If translated in the other national languages of Singapore, these poems, will definitely act as powerful stimulant of patriotism in the readers’ minds.
Twelve poems under the subdivision Arumbugal (The Buds) are the contribution of the poet to Children literature. Simple words expressed with jingling rhythm have the power to attract children. Saluting the national flag, admiring Nature and attention towards education form the themes of these poems.

Six poems under the subdivision Kaathal (Love) demonstrate the poet’s unique attitude in composing love-poems. He shuns sensuous description of women’s beauty.in the poem titled "Aval peerazhagi"(The Great Beauty) he personifies Nature as his ladylove and efficiently expresses his love towards nature.Manjalaayk kungumamaay mananthaval engee? (Where is the SweetHeart?) is an elegy composed at the sad demise of his beloved wife. The other poems in this section are sublime love lyrics.
The last and largest subdivision of this book,Samudhaayam (Society) consists of Twenty-three poems.
The poet’s progressive views and lofty ideals form the themes of poems.
The poet has composed befitting eulogies in praise of President of the republic of Singapore Hon.S.R.Nathan, Lee Kuan Yew -the architect of modern Singapore and Goh Chok Tong, the senior minister of Singapore.
The sense of gratitude that every citizen of Singapore wishes to express when he thinks of LeeKuanYew is powerfully put forth with choice diction in a poem. The smallest country in the Southeast Asia, Singapore has become the richest by the meticulous work of the Leader Lee.
We also endorse the poet’s views whole-heartedly when he sings in praise of this unique leader.
He is our Guiding star!
The darling of our eyes!
Abounds all the wealth
Our eyes are moist in gratitude!

PICHINIKKAADU ILANGO

PICHINIKKAADU ILANGO, A TAMIL POET IN SINGAPORE IS FAMOUS FOR HIS THOUGHT-PROVOKING POEMS IN VERSE LIBRE AS WELL AS TRADITIONAL PROSODY.
Muthal osai ,a volume of traditional poems is a compilation of 49 poems in traditional meter.

The poems in this volume show the skill and craftsmanship of the poet in poetic art.
The choice of words, portrayal of images and similes in a simple and subtle manner depict the uniqueness of the poet.
He shuns the impact of his predecessors and explores new styles of expressions in his own way.
The poem titled ‘Vaergal’(Roots) explains the importance of the roots for any positive growth and development.Be it the beautiful flowers ,fruit-yielding trees or public welfare projects, the strength and efficiency of the roots remain as the main source. But does anybody think of it?
The poet hails the roots as embodiments of sacrificial mind and abode of wisdom.

The "Night Saree" ( eravuch chaelai)is a pen-portrait of the night.Saree is an Indian garment of atleast Five metres length which is wrapped around the bodies by women. The saree consists of beautiful designs in attractive colours. In this poem the poet describes the sky as a lady who wears the night time as a saree around her body. The moon is described as the attractive face of the sky.The poet falls in love with the damsel, sky, attracted by her saree as well as face. Here he reminds us of Bharati’s poem "Azhaguth theyvam" in which he depicts an embodiment of dazzling beauty who comes in his dream and drives him to the height of ecstasy.Bharati,a worshipper of SHAKTHI,suggests the readers that he is describing SHAKTHI in his poem.Pichinikkaadu an admirer of mother Nature gives the suggestion through this poem that his love with nature is endless.

"The Rain"(Mazhai) is a short poem in admiration of the rain as a boon to humanity.

"Kavippoo"(Poetic Flower) illustrates the plights of the poets in search of themes and moods to bring forth poems. The poet is a sculptor. It is believed that Indira creates Rainbow. The poet surpasses Indira in his kaleidoscopic varieety of imagination, according to Pichinikkaadu.
"What is a poem"(Edhu Kavithai?)is definitely the manifesto of Pichinikkaadu. Here,in this poem he gives a definition to poetry. There should not be empty words and bombastic rhythm in poetry.Lofty ideals and original thinking should adorn the poetry. No attack on anybody but
constructive ideals to create a new world should be the aim of the poet.

The Fire itself weeps"(Neruppae azhukirathu")is an elegy to the students of an agricultural college in Coimbatore who were burnt alive by hooligans in protest against a verdict finding fault with their political leader in a corruption case. The young ladies who were on an educational tour became the victims of political rowdyism. It made the poet to burst in a very sad mood.Pichinikkaadu is an old student of that agricultural college. It aggravated his despair and he laments over the pitiable death of the innocent young girls. The cruelty and gruesome mentality of the culprits becomes the target of the poet’s attack. One who reads this poem will surely weep instantly as the poem depicts the anguish of the poet in a powerful manner. It comes from the heart of the poet and has the power to penetrate the souls of the raeders.

"Neettaatheae Paattai"("DO NOT DRAG ON YOUR POETIC CAREER") is a revealation that mere poetic career is a useless job. Service to the mankind, animals, birds and other creatures is the need of the hour.A fleet of Doves which crosses the poet gives this piece of advice to him and he realises this truth and makes up his mind to dedicate in the self-lesss service to other beings.

"Agony of the Cuckoo"(Kuyilin sogam") is a lyric depicting the sad mood of a cuckoo.

The poem is symbolic and has a deep meaning. The folk rhythm and simple words employed in this poem possess the power to melt even minds made of iron. The poem is a mixture of both obscurantic and anecdotal elements making a rare combination. The artistic skill of narration is highly commendable.

‘In Those days"(Andhak kaalam") is an expression of nostalgia. The poet frowns in remembrance of those days when the nature was given due respect by our ancestors. Now due to de-forestation we suffer from eco-imbalance.The poet longs for those days and wishes such a period to usher in.
"To my dear wife"(anbaana manaivikku") is an imaginary letter from the poet to his wife.

This letter wishes to explain the agony and anguish of the workers who have left their home-land to other places just for a fair earning and uplift of their economic status.

KAVIMUGIL
-A TRENDSETTER FROM THE YOUNGER GENERATION

Kavimugil’ is the pen-name of A.P.Sakthivel, a poet who is worth mentionable for his Haiku model poems in Tamil.Kavimugil is shaped and molded as a prominent poet by his mentor Thaaraa barathi, an illustrious poet of Tamilnadu who had died a premature death at his early fifties.
Thaaraa Barathi can be described as ‘The Mayakovsky of India’for his highly motivating poems, which are still a source of inspiration for the youth of Tamilnadu.
    “     Do not say I am empty-handed
  It is unwise;
      A big fortune your ten
         Fingers may rise. “
Is the famous poem written by Thaaraa Barathi which acts as a morale-booster among the unemployed youth of Tamilnadu. Most of Thaaraa Barathi’s poems have the potential to serve as a source of inspiration for its readers, irrespective of their age and status.
Kavimugil also got his source of inspiration from Thaaraa Barathi and he had his upward mobility from a middle-class job seeker to an owner of an Auto-Financing company. Thaaraa Barathi awakened the poet in him at the appropriate time in an appropriate manner.
Kavimugil’s poems have a powerful satirical note.
        We built many houses
            But still we are
        Sleeping in pavements.

         Oh! The prices!
 Have gone up!
            For M.P.s!

Let us fight till the end
            Success will be there
        For our Bosses!

We shouted, “The country is ours”
            Misunderstood the politicians
They sold it to amass wealth

These mini-poems written in a Haiku format are full of sarcasm and have the power to educate the readers about the social evils. Avoiding direct attack and harsh criticism Kavimugil makes the reader laugh instantaneously after reading the poem. The reader gets an awareness to understand the prevailing social problems and acquires a responsibility to devote his attention in the right path to usher in a welfare society.
The poet also lashes out at the pollution prevalent in cities and towns inhabited by the ‘so called’intellectuals.

  Our breath and the air
            Everything is polluted by smoke.
        Our conversation polluted by English
            Have become inimical to our soil;
        The water available for drinking
            Is full of worms and viruses;
        No  time to converse with friends;
            We have become Robots!

Urbanization process has changed the values of life; Men have become machines. They have to run, run and run in the ‘rat race’ to achieve material success. In this hurry, they forget their families and friends. There arises a big vacuum in life. The poet makes the readers realize their follies by his poem.

An important message is told in simple words, which are able to convey the poet’s message in a befitting manner.

Kavimugil is a trendsetter in the younger generation. His poems reveal his mature mind, which crave for a socialist state devoid of barriers in the name of Caste, Religion, Language and status. When his readers realize this and initiate steps in a democratic manner we are sure his dreams will be translated into social change.
