Friends
There had been not much activity from my end because I was pretty disappointed and dejected (I am sure so are millions of other fans) at Team India’s loss to Sri Lanka and their sure shot elimination. I did blog immediately in my other blogspot about our performance against Srilanka (Click here if you would like to read it).
As soon as India started to capitulate, as usual my heart started to beat faster and my BP was going higher than what the Indian team scored. By the time the match was over I felt like meeting the so called Indian superstars and giving them a piece of my mind. Then later I slowly but surely overcame this feeling and started wondering as to why do we fans behave in such a manner. It is because of the high expectations that we have in our team and why do we have such high expectations, because we have seen the same set of players perform extra-ordinarily well and made us feel proud about being an Indian. I think we should criticize our Indian team for their defeat, but I also feel we should not go overboard with it.
This defeat will definitely ring in a lot of changes in the Indian team, but I hope it is carefully thought out changes and not a knee jerk reaction. I for one might be amongst the handful of Indians who would vote for retaining Greg Chappel as coach, the reason is, if you carefully monitor what he has been saying over the last 2 years, we lost exactly because of that factor. We lost primarily because of our inability to field and inability to convert 1’s into 2’s while running. Had the Kaifs, Raina’s been retained I am sure they would have atleast stopped 25 runs on the field. Chappel very well understood that the strength of India has never been bowling, so he worked hard on the factor that can be improved and that was fielding and running between wickets, but what happened in the last couple of months, we ended up fielding dads army instead of the team that was being built for the last 2 years. Of course the guys where going through a bad phase while batting, but who has not. If you rewind Kaif was the top scorer for India in the previous tour of the windies. So what caused the problem, a knee jerk reaction by the selection comittee because Kaif and Raina did not score for couple of matches. And now I sincerely hope they do not come up with another knee jerk reaction and give Chappel some time to fulfil his commitment toward excellence of Indian cricket.
