She lost in the Best Pop Single category of the Billboard Awards. Shakira lost the coveted Billboard award to Nelly Furtado’s “Promiscuous.” Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, the two awaited ceremony hostesses were a no-show. Hilton decided not to show up because she thought the script may offend her friends, so several presenters replaced her during the ceremony. One of the first awards of the evening went to R&B diva Mary J. Blige. Nominated in five categories, she finally nabbed the Best Female R&B/Hip Hop Artist of the Year. Her new album, “The Breakthrough,” won her nine awards, like R&B/Hip Hop Artist of the Year, R&B/Hip Hop Female Artist of the Year, and R&B/Hip Hop Album of the Year. “The Breakthrough” debuted at number one on Billboard’s popularity chart in December and sold 2.6 million copies. In other news, Chris Brown, a 17-year-old boy who calls his music “hip hop with a swagger,” won the Best Up and Coming Artist, Best Male Artist, and Artist of the Year. An 18-year-old girl from Barbados called Rihana and country singer Carrie Underwood -American Idol- defeated Blige and Beyonce. Rihana nabbed the Best Female Performer award, and Underwood won in the Best Country Album and Best Album of the Year for “Some Hearts.”
